JONATHAN HOBBS: ROMFORD is once again the place to be for open-race fans with another superb Friday night programme.

For once, there’s no Desperado Dan on the card after the announcement earlier this week that Patrick Janssens’ runner has been retired after a stellar career and another competition win last week. However, in a fitting move, Romford names a race after the Evan Herbert-owned stayer tonight as his sofa days begin!

There’s one final tonight, a maiden stayers decider over 575m, and it might be worth taking on hot favourite here Alaskan Dawn, so read on . . .

Here’s tonight’s thoughts.

Romford Friday

6.28: Bubbly Rascal might be drawn for a big run. He showed decent pace in a Towcester trial in midweek and, well drawn inside in this 400m contest, should always be handy for the Paul Young kennel. Signature Callum, with a great record here, certainly makes the market.

Play: Bubbly Rascal

6.43: A cracking bitches’ race where a smash break from Slippy Rose or Playbook could see either escape the pack – the latter is always a tough nut to crack in front. However Carol Grasso’s Jet Stream Mags has good Romford lines and has moved well enough in comeback trials.

Play: Jet Stream Mags

7.56:  Heat one of the stayers (575m) provides Mark Wallis with one of many chances tonight with Antigua Boy here. He’s been running in top company at Perry Barr and, capable of leading, might always force the issue. Perrysblueyedboy looks the danger.

Play: Antigua Boy

8.17: Essex Vase winner Antigua Romeo is head and shoulders above these on best form after clocking 34.66 in the big final here in January. A decent start is needed but Mark Wallis’s runner can make a successful return after decent enough efforts at Perry Barr.

Play: Antigua Romeo

8.38: Frainey Forever is tough to look beyond after recent wins and looks to maintain an unbeaten run. However, better value could be had with Bogside Drama should the white jacket miss a beat. Eric Samuels’ Yarmouth bitch has run well here before and the wider draw helps?

Play: Bogside Drama

8.54: Final time now and Alaskan Dawn is the one to beat. He ran amok in the heats and easily posted the fastest time. However whoever wins will need to catch likely leader Underground Aero. Paul Young’s bitch has chunks to find on the clock, but could get away?

Play: Underground Aero

9.12: Hopes Bullet has strong leadability claims with his best foot forward. He failed to land a telling blow in a good field at Towcester but an earlier strike for gold here could seal the deal for Mark Wallis’s dog over six bends. Hove raider Droopys Señorita is interesting up in trip.

Play: Hopes Bullet

9.28: A maiden marathon brings the curtain down again and another ‘Antigua’ runner will be popular in Antigua Billy. However Slippy Mick won well enough in S1 company latest and this improving Michelle Brown-trained runner can go in again with a clear round.

Play: Slippy Mick

Good luck all.
