JONATHAN HOBBS: Saturday night’s the night I like, get some greyhound action in…. Apologies to Elton John and Bernie Taupin, but the best of the week’s action is very much Saturday-centric now and Sheffield and Monmore come to the table big-style with heats of two major Category One competitions.

At Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium it’s the RPGTV Steel City Cup heats, live on the channel, while at Wolverhampton’s Monmore Green Stadium the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby heats take place. Two cracking events and lots of punting opportunities.

Starting with the RPGTV Steel City Cup heats . . .

8.24: Jimmy Fenwick was expected to win the Steel City Cup with Ice On Fire but, with the champion heading straight to the Derby, kennelmate Look Like Power has a great opportunity. His C&D form is top notch and he gets first run on strong Headford Ranger.

Play: Look Like Power 2-1

8.44: Ballymac Ambrose has looked top notch ever since equalling Barnfield On Air’s track record at Belle Vue. Wins there, Nottingham and here at Sheffield catch the eye – Bev Heaton’s dog might prove too strong for earlybird Plaza Lep.

Play: Ballymac Ambrose 2-1

9.01: Volcanic Reef could kick-start a fine night for his trainer Heather Dimmock. The Coral Winter Derby winner gets a better draw than last week and should dominate with his cracking burst of early pace. Sharpys Rocket’s local form grabs the eye for the forecast.

Play: Volcanic Reef 2-5

9.18: The Dimmock double could be landed by Make No Apologie. He’s best when dominating matters so defeat behind Ice On Fire was no disgrace once the favourite led. However he could get back on track here, although big respect to the in-form Kilara Lion.

Play: Make No Apologie 4-1

9.36: A good match-up here between Coolavanny Messi and Goldies Ginola – both are best off the front and are good starters. The break looks crucial with preference for the former given Mark Wallis’s middle seed might just be better drawn.

Play: Coolavanny Messi 4-3

9.54: Another good clash between Antigua Romeo and Lenson Whelan. The former won well over C&D last week so certainly has a favourite’s chance, although a red-jacket draw for Patrick Janssens’s runner might give him the edge. He trialled well over two bends.

Play: Lenson Whelan 1-5

At Monmore the heats of the Ladbrokes Puppy Derby take centre-stage and the puppy class of 2020 looks a fantastic crop spiced by a batch of youngsters from the McNair/KSS academy – the next generation of Kings and Queens!

That said Ernie Gaskin also has a fantastic team of youngsters and could pick up a few heats tonight with a treble possible for the in-form handler courtesy of well-drawn Ballydoyle Blake (7.38), top-class Droopys Addition (8.11) and improving Newinn Jacko (8.27).

The remaining heats can go to John Mullins’ unbeaten Smallmead (7.07), the McNairs two-time winner Queen Jessiej (7.23) after impressive trial work and Ted Soppitt’s unbeaten Calzaghe Mint (7.54), winner of a Sunderland comp recently.

Good luck everyone.
