JONATHAN HOBBS: TOWCESTER kick-starts its return as a greyhound track tonight in the best possible fashion with a crackerjack invitation race over 500m.

The Northamptonshire venue has been shut almost two years having staged the Derby in 2017 and 2018 before closing, but reopens tonight under the auspices of new promoter Kevin Boothby, also the boss of Henlow.

The races are on the SIS tonight, with Central Park and Pelaw the RPGTV meetings. Sky Sports Racing (Sky Channel 415) also covers the racing from Pelaw.

Here are a few eye-catchers tonight.

Towcester

4.42: A superb invitation race which sees this year’s first and second in the Coronation Cup go head to head with Sparta Master versus the winner then Antigua Rum. Trials suggest Sharon Thompson’s dog is more forward at this stage. Respect here also to the Roxholme duo of Butt and Dolly. Both are top-notch.

Play: Sparta Master

5.42: Savana Towcester could shine here for Frank Gray. The youngster has only three races on his UK card and is heavyweight performer who has trialled back well and looks to confirm the promise of his Romford open-race win in March. This track should play to his strengths even more.

Play: Savana Towcester

6.42: Mark Wallis was formerly based at Towcester and, now attached to Henlow, the champion trainer is amongst a number of handlers able to supply runners to both venues. Alien Sea is one of two runners for Wallis in the A2 and will run strongly throughout here as classy 575m winner at Romford.

Play: Alien Sea

Central Park

5.27: Having just his third start, the Dan Brabon-trained Sheriff Star could step up for victory. Running in an A2 sweepstakes heat, his pace at both ends could land the spoils here with a 29.55 best time catching the eye here, although coping with the early speed of Reggies Boy and Treanaree Lee is key from the boxes.

Play: Sheriff Star

6.57: Sprint action now for another Central Park wager where Tiger Scarlet could be draw for a decent run – indeed she could make her rivals see red! Ray Butler’s bitch is an experienced sort but has run two solid comeback races since the break and her strong-running style – and the draw – could make hay.

Play: Tiger Scarlet

7.57: Houdini Lad might be ready to escape the clutches of his rivals in the top-grade affair. He’s run in two tougher races on comeback and the Bob Pattinson-trained runner could again make a splash from the off. He traps better than Dunham Skippy and might always be handy towards the inner.

Play: Houdini Lad

Good luck all.

*RPGTV (Sky Channel 175, Freesat 176) will show Central Park and Pelaw Grange tonight, while Sky Sports Racing (Sky Channel 415) also covers the racing from Pelaw. Towcester will be broadcast on SIS.
