PREVIEW
Manchester United have their first home league game of the season later this evening as Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham make the trip north. The Red Devils needed a late own goal to seal all three points at the Hawthorns last weekend and they will relish the chance to play in front of their own fans.

Spurs’ preparations for their first league game have been rocked by the news that Luka Modric has gone on strike after Chelsea increased their bid to around £30million for his services. Spurs’ have a tough enough job on their hands without these off-field distractions.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side did not lose a single league game at Old Trafford last season and the manager will expect the same this time around. Further concern for the visitors is that Spurs’ last victory over United came in 2001, while they have not tasted success at Old Trafford since 1989.

Although Hearts were clearly off the pace last week in their Europa League contest with Spurs, the 5-0 win will have settled any pre-season nerves. Spurs were clinical against their Scottish opponents and they will have been buoyed with the news that Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic will not feature because of injury. Youngsters Phil Jones and Chris Smalling will likely step into centre-back, but the hosts will lack experience. One plus is that Patrice Evra is expected to return to the side after missing the West Brom game and the left back will be hugely important in a re-shuffled back four.

United’s home form was so strong last year that it would be unadvisable to bet against the champions, who also have a brilliant record against Spurs. At around 1.66 on the ‘Daq’ I would recommend backing a home win.
