PREVIEW
There are a number of mini battles within the Premier League this season and the fight for fourth could be the most competitive as an ailing Arsenal face a struggle to fend off Liverpool and Tottenham who have serious designs on the Champions League places.
Kenny Dalglish’s men (2.14) are viewed as the biggest rivals to the Gunners (1.93) in the race for a top four slot, while Spurs are the outsiders of the trio (3.25) on BETDAQ.
The Reds couldn’t quite click into gear in their opening match against Sunderland, but expectations are high on Merseyside, and rightly so after shopping sprees in the last two transfer windows that even Roberto Mancini would be proud of.
According to everyone but Arsene Wenger, Arsenal’s problem is their lack of spending, especially with a Cesc Fabregas-shaped hole in the squad and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Samir Nasri.
New recruit Gervinho is out of this game after seeing red at Newcastle and is joined by fellow suspendee Alex Song. They are in good company on the sidelines: Kieran Gibbs, Johan Djourou, Tomas Rosicky, Armand Traore, Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby all miss out through injury.
At the Emirates, Wenger’s boys will have their backers for this one at 2.67, but their performances in the bore draw against Newcastle at St James’ Park and during the slender win at home to Udinese in the Champions League play-off first leg have hardly set the pulses racing.
Liverpool are available at 3.0 on BETDAQ to pull off an away victory, but it is worth remembering that the last time they managed one of those in the Premier League against Arsenal it was Titi Camera who struck in a 1-0 victory all the way back in February 2000.
Draws are a theme when these sides go head-to-head. Six of the previous ten meetings in all competitions have ended level and another wouldn’t be the worst result for either gaffer at this stage of the season. Back the stalemate at 3.3.
