PREVIEW

Denmark get their European U21 Championships underway as hosts and have a tough first assignment against Switzerland this evening. The Danes will be expected to put on a great show for the local supporters, but a victory will be anything but a walk in the park.

Ajax’s attacking midfielder, Christian Eriksen, will be charged with breaking through a resilient defense and he has continued to thrive at club level in Holland. He has made 14 appearances for the Danish senior side and has scored once, although he’s never represented the U21’s.

Switzerland will have arrived at the tournament full of confidence given some of their performances during the build-up. Interestingly, the Swiss have generally been very strong at U21 but have struggled to build on their foundation at the next level. The senior squad only recently held England to a 2-2 draw at Wembley, although they let a 2-0 lead slip after the break.

Two players the Danes must keep tabs on are Valentin Stocker and Xherdan Shaqiri, who have both had experience in the full international squad. Punters may recall Shaqiri scoring a stunning goal against England back in September in Euro 2012 qualifying.

The fact that the Danes have only played friendlies in the build up to the finals may count against them. Pierluigi Tami’s are solid at the back and it’ll be worth backing them to frustrate the hosts and hold them to a point first time out.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
