HEAD-TO-HEAD

03 Sep 2010 Euro Qualifier Armenia 0-1 Ireland

PREVIEW

Following a straightforward 2-0 win over Andorra on Friday night, Giovanni Trapattoni’s side tightened their grip on second place and remained in touch with Russia. The Irish are now two points behind the league leaders, who can qualify top with a win over Andorra.

It will be anything but a walk in the park this evening as Ireland take on third-placed Armenia. The visitors are only a point behind Ireland and will fancy their chances of an upset. An away win is currently trading at around 5.3 on BETDAQ.

Armenia come into the clash off the back of a convincing 4-1 win against Macedonia. Vardan Minasyan’s side lead the way in the scoring charts in Group B with 21 goals. In contrast, Ireland have 13 goals to their name – with only two arriving in their past three European qualifiers.

However, the Irish have been excellent in defense and have kept a clean sheet in their past ten internationals.

Ireland were very well organised at the back when they beat Armenia 1-0 in their opening group game last year.

The hosts know the dangers of playing for a draw, so I expect Ireland to have a go at Armenia. Ireland’s defense has been so strong of late that a single goal has often been enough for them. I expect another tight game here, but one that Ireland can win backed by a vociferous home support.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)

Back Ireland at around 1.78: 5 points
Monday’s Return: -5 points
