Arsenal need a huge second-leg turnaround if they are to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, but their league form suggests they’ll give AC Milan a run for their money.
An insipid performance at the San Siro leaves the Gunners with a huge challenge and they’ll need to be far sharper at the back to keep Zlatan Ibrahimovic and co at arm’s length. Arsene Wenger will have been delighted with the improvements in the league wins over Tottenham and Arsenal.
Robin van Persie scored a brace at Anfield and his winner in the final minute took his tally to 25 league goals for the season. The Dutchman was kept very quiet in the first leg and he’ll be looking for a much improved performance at the second time of asking.
AC Milan hammered Palermo 4-0 at the weekend to keep up their good run and Ibrahimovic scored a hat-trick. That was the fourth game on the spin without a defeat and a third consecutive away victory. The four goal lead means that the Italians don’t have to attack the Gunners and can play on the counter-attack, which can be a dangerous tactic.
Arsenal have got nothing to lose and will attack from the first whistle to try put some doubt in the Milan players’ minds. The Gunners can get the win on the night, but reaching the last eight looks a step too far.
