PREVIEW

The Audi Cup starts with a fantastic contest between Bayern Munich and AC Milan as the European giants step up their pre-season preparations. Even though the Bundesliga and Serie A are still a little way off, it will offer both managers a chance to get a proper look at their squad against some tough opposition.

European Champions, Barcelona, and Brazilian side Internacional make up the four clubs in what promises to be an entertaining competition. Bayern and Milan last met four years ago in the Champions League and it was the Italian side that went through 4-2 on aggregate. The Rossoneri went on to lift the trophy that year having beaten Liverpool 2-1 in the Athens final.

Franck Ribery will be missing for the hosts with an injury, but Jupp Heynckes has the majority of his side to pick from. Starman Thomas Muller will be a threat from midfield and will look to join the attack at every opportunity.

Bayern had a shocking start to the Bundesliga last year and Heynckes will be looking to have his side up and running before the opening weekend.

Fans might have seen that Milan won their last friendly 12-0, although Bayern will likely provide a tougher test than minnows Solbiatese Arno. Still, it will have boosted confidence amongst the strikers and they’ll be keen to add to their pre-season tally.

The Germans will of course have home advantage in their favour and with that I fancy Bayern to make a winning start in the Audi Cup.
