PREVIEW

Bayern Munich bounced back from a disappointing start to the new Bundesliga season with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Wolfsburg. The three points came courtesy of Luiz Gustavo’s 90th minute strike and manager Jupp Heynckes will be looking for less stressful game against FC Zurich this evening.

The German side have an excellent home record in Europe and prior to their 3-2 defeat to Inter in last season’s Champions League second round – they had won their past seven matches. Bayern were losing finalists in the 2009/10 competition and won their only modern Champions League title in 2000/01. Having finished third in the league last season, the Germans are having to qualify for the main competition for only the third time in their history.

FC Zurich’s last European away outing was against AC Milan in the 2009/10 season and they ran out 1-0 winners in the group stages. However, the Swiss outfit have been unable to build on that away success and have failed to win their past three European fixtures on the road – losing twice in that time.

Manager Urs Fischer knows his side are up against it and the club have never won in Germany. They have lost four and drawn one of their five matches playing on German soil.

With home advantage and with Bayern picking up their first win of the campaign at the weekend, I fancy them to take a decent lead back to Switzerland next week. At around 1.58 on the ‘Daq’ the hosts look a good shout to start their European adventure with a comfortable victory.
