PREMIER LEAGUE THURSDAY: We look ahead to Thursday’s Premier League game between SOUTHAMPTON v WEST HAM with extended stats and a recommended BETDAQ bet.

SOUTHAMPTON V WEST HAM

7.45pm After a manic day in the Premier League yesterday, we only have one fixture to enjoy and we kick off at 7.45pm as Southampton welcome West Ham. Southampton come into this clash off the back of two wins against Arsenal and Huddersfield, scoring six goals along the way which is highly impressive given their struggles to score goals this season and last. That has really given them a boost at the bottom of the table and now they have a bit of cushion between themselves and the bottom three – although not much!

West Ham had been in excellent form too and scoring plenty of goals prior to losing 2-0 at home to Watford last weekend. That came as a shock considering they went into that fixture off the back of four wins and 11 goals in those four games. They have won their last two away games, scoring five goals without conceding so we expect a very good game here.

The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Southampton 2.3, West Ham 3.25 and the draw is 3.6. Apart from the game against Watford, West Ham have been very impressive lately and despite beating Arsenal here recently we simply have to lay Southampton at the odds. The 2.3 on the home win looks very short and we fully expect a much closer game than those odds suggest. West Ham have been good away from home this season and we need to see more consistency from Southampton before backing them at odds like this.

MATCH STATS

  • Southampton have only lost one of their previous nine home league games against West Ham (W4 D4), with that lone defeat coming in February 2017 (1-3).
  • West Ham are looking to win back-to-back games against Southampton in the Premier League for the first time since October 2001 (a run of four wins).
  • After winning their first ever away game at Southampton in the Premier League (2-0 in November 1993), West Ham have won just two of 15 such games since (D6 L7).
  • This match between Southampton and West Ham United will be the ninth Premier League match played on a Thursday since the start of 2016-17 – none of the previous eight have been won by the side playing at home (W0 D4 L4).
  • Charlie Austin has never scored a Premier League goal on a Thursday (two games) but has scored on every other day of the week during his Premier League career. Should he score in his match, he’d be the 26 th different player to score on every day of the week in the Premier League.
