PREMIER LEAGUE THURSDAY: We preview Thursday’s two Premier League matches with recommended BETDAQ bets and extended match stats. It’s SHEFFIELD UNITED V NEWCASTLE and ARSENAL V BRIGHTON.

SHEFFIELD UNITED V NEWCASTLE

7.30pm We may have had more glamourous ties in the Premier League this week but we have two very interesting fixtures tonight. All eyes might be on how Arsenal get on given Emery was sacked recently but Sheffield United have been excellent this season and they have another great chance for three points hosting Newcastle. They’ve been grinding out results lately against Wolves, Manchester United and Spurs so this is welcome step down in opposition however Newcastle managed to hold Manchester City at the weekend too, so we expect a good game here.

The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Sheffield United 1.91, Newcastle 5.0 and the draw is 3.55. Apart from beating West Ham away from home recently, Newcastle have struggled away and with Sheffield United playing some excellent attacking football we like the home win here at 1.91. They have much better form heading into this tie and the 1.91 is too big to ignore.

BETDAQ BEST BET:
Sheffield United to beat Newcastle at 1.91.

MATCH STATS

  • Both Sheffield United and Newcastle have won two games each in their four previous Premier League meetings, with both sides winning at home once and away once.
  • Newcastle have won five of their last six meetings with Sheffield United in all competitions, with this the first game between the sides since April 2010 (Newcastle winning 2-1 in the Championship).
  • Newcastle have won their last two midweek Premier League games (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), after failing to win any of their previous 20 such matches in the competition (D9 L11).
  • Newcastle have only lost two of their last 21 league games in Yorkshire (W14 D5), with those defeats coming against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship (April 2017) and Huddersfield in the Premier League (August 2017).
  • Sheffield United have scored three goals in each of their last two Premier League home games. They’d only scored 3+ goals in two of their previous 44 at Bramall Lane in the competition.
  • None of Newcastle’s seven Premier League away games has ended in a draw this season (W2 L5). The Magpies have kept just one clean sheet in those seven games, beating Spurs 1-0 in August.
  • Sheffield United striker Lys Mousset has been directly involved in eight of the Blades’ last 11 Premier League goals (5 goals, 3 assists).
  • Eight of Newcastle’s 13 Premier League goals this season have been scored by defenders – the highest such ratio in the competition in 2019-20 (61.5%).
  • Sheffield United have conceded only one goal in the opening 30 minutes of Premier League matches this season – fewer than any other side.
  • No player has had more shots without scoring in the Premier League this season than Miguel Almirón (23, level with Sheffield United’s David McGoldrick). However, the Paraguayan did register his first assist in the competition last time out against Manchester City.

ARSENAL V BRIGHTON

8.15pm What to expect from Arsenal tonight? Nobody knows! We didn’t see a manager sacked bounce at the weekend as they drew with Norwich. To be honest at some stage fans have to start blaming the players and stop wanting the manager to be sacked after a poor run. OK, Emery had a poor win percentage but let’s see if anything changes. We can’t forget they pushed Wenger out, and now they are in a worse position. Brighton must fancy their chances of a result here given the situation at Arsenal, and they came close to getting a draw an Anfield at the weekend.

The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Arsenal 1.63, Brighton 5.8 and the draw is 4.5. Arsenal were odds on too at the weekend and as we said then, how can anyone back them with confidence at these prices. They have always been unreliable away from home, but that has come into their home form too this season and we fancy Brighton to get a result here. The 1.63 on Arsenal is just too short and we have to lay them.

BETDAQ BEST BET:
Lay Arsenal at 1.63.

MATCH STATS

  • Arsenal have never lost a home match against Brighton in any competition, winning six, drawing two and keeping six clean sheets in the process.
  • Brighton are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Arsenal (W1 D2) – they’ve never gone four without defeat against them in all competitions.
  • This is Brighton’s first ever Premier League game on a Thursday. They’re winless in their last seven midweek games (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), losing each of the last five in a row (D2).
  • Arsenal have only lost one of their last 25 Premier League home games (W17 D7), though are winless in their last three at the Emirates (D3). They last went four league games without a home win in August 2012, while they last did so within a single season in February 1995 (8 games).
  • Arsenal have only failed to score in two of their last 59 home Premier League games, with both games coming against Manchester City (0-3 March 2018, 0-2 August 2018).
  • Brighton have lost their last four Premier League away games – they’ve never lost five in a row on the road in the competition, last doing so in league football back in March 2006 (a run of eight).
  • Since beating Watford 3-0 on the opening weekend, Brighton are winless in six away league games (D1 L5), scoring just three goals in that run. All three of those goals have been scored by defenders, with Lewis Dunk netting their last two on the road.
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Arsenal the lead inside 10 minutes in both Premier League meetings with Brighton last season – however, the Seagulls came back to draw 1-1 both times.
  • Arsenal are winless in eight matches in all competitions (D6 L2) – should they fail to beat Brighton, it would be their worst winless run since March 1977, a run of 10.
  • Six of Brighton’s last eight Premier League goals have been scored via set pieces (four free- kicks, a corner and a penalty) – their first eight goals this season were all scored in open play.
