PURPLE PATCH: The Cesarewitch this Saturday at Newmarket is the pick of the weekend’s racing and trainer Willie Mullins is looking to continue his impressive form in the 2021 renewal.

Can Mullins make it four from four in the Cesarewitch?

Willie Mullins is well known for his mastery when training over Jumps, but in recent times he has a fine record of preparing horses for big handicap on the Flat too, and none more so than in the Cesarewitch.

Mullins has won the last three renewals of the 2m2f contest on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, beginning with Low Sun in 2018, followed by Stratum in 2019 and last year with 9/2F Great White Shark.

That’s an impressive record in any book, but even more so when you consider the Cesarewitch is one of the most competitive handicaps of the whole season!

Mullins has run 16 horses in the race in the last six seasons, and alongside his three successes he has achieved four places. That works out at an almost impossible 44% win and place rate in the race.

You certainly wouldn’t bet against the master of Closutton making it four from four on Saturday but working out which one to side with could be more of a challenge.

He currently has a huge 11 entries in the race, including 6.0 favourite M C Muldoon and other well fancied runner, the 2020 Triumph Hurdle winner, Burning Victory.
