IRISH GRAND NATIONAL DAY: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse with an each-way selection in the big race due off at 5pm.

Last year’s 1-2-3 General Principle, Isleofhopendreams and Forever Gold are back to fight it out again and whilst course form is obviously important – all three are infrequent winners and couldn’t be relied upon to run so well again 12 months later – especially as it was heavy ground last season.

Gordon Elliott won it last year and has a battalion out in force (at what point does he simply run out of different coloured caps?!). DAQMAN makes a case for the Davy Russell ridden mare Shattered Love to give the jockey the famous Aintree/Fairyhouse double and I can also see the Jack Kennedy ridden Gun Digger running a big race on his first start since falling at the Cheltenham Festival.

Elliott might be thwarted though by his nemesis Willie Mullins though who saddles two particularly strong candidates amongst his seven entries.

Both Pairofbrowneyes and the Ruby Walsh ridden Burrows Saint look to have strong claims on the 3m 5f marathon.

Preference is narrowly for Pairofbrowneyes who missed Cheltenham and Aintree but was a very impressive when winning the Leinster National Handicap Chase at Naas in March and shouldn’t lack in the stamina department.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP (EACH-WAY) PAIROFBROWNEYES (5.00 Fairyhouse)
