ONE FOR THE NOTEBOOK: Shamrock landed a lay yesterday but only just. Now he thinks the horse should go in the notebook as a future winner. He naps at Leicester today and tries another lay there.

I’m not going to tell you about Irish racing later in the week. Look what happened yesterday! I had Last Instalment in my notebook for the beginners’ chase.

Then I changed my mind when Davy Russell got off him for another Gigginstown runner, the gambled-on Fists Of Fury, who jumped badly and was beaten more than 26 lengths at 6-4 favourite.

Fortunately, a lay on Montan kept me in pocket on the day, but only just. Though Tony Martin is badly out of form and hasn’t won at Galway in 11 years, Montan was heavily backed and finished a decent second of 18 on deteriorating ground.

I shall put Montan down as a good thing when Martin returns to form. Oh no; there I go again! Marking my card for the future, when I know something will change my mind on the day.

Maybe I should stick to lays: Colombian (3.00 Leicester) is tempting. Godolphin field two against him, giving them scope for manipulating the pace, and Irish-bred Late Telegraph could be anything.

SHAMROCK’S BETS
NAP: Madgenta (2.30 Leicester)
LAY: Colombian (3.00 Leicester)
DAQ DOUBLE: Madgenta (2.30 Leicester) and Sonko (2.50 Southwell)
