SHAMROCK NOT HAPPY:  Shamrock is licking his wounds after his two lays won on Wednesday. He attempts a recovery mission at Tramore today. Their jumps card gets underway at 2.15.

That really hurt yesterday and hands up I got it wrong – the two place lays (and one lay) on two favourites at Navan backfired when both won and won well.

It hurt me financially and left a great deal of egg on my face. It always hurts more with lays and makes you feel worse even though mathematically it’s no different than a 11/8 win tip losing – in the case of Hidden Universe’s win yesterday. That was around 1.6 on the place market so effectively we were backing an 11/8 shot.

In the cold light of day I’ve reviewed whether I regret the two bets and even with the benefit of the results I am happy with the reasoning. Balmont Mast had an absence to overcome and has had plenty of chances whilst Hidden Universe had performed poorly at Galway and was out of the frame at odds on in the same race last year.

So it was simply a case of just getting it wrong – you won’t be surprised to hear I’m avoiding any lays at Tramore today.

GOLAN GUY looks the bet of the day. He bids for a rare hat-trick of three consecutive wins on the flat, chases and hurdles. The Tony Martin trained runner, trading around 2/1 on BETDAQ in early morning trade, won the Down Royal Cesarewitch last month before winning a beginners chase at Downpatrick in fine style.

The suspicion is that he’s a very well handicapped horse and can complete FCH treble by winning this afternoon.
