OFF TO THE SEASIDE: Shamrock heads to the beach at Laytown today for their annual race meeting. He bids to follow up yesterday’s winning nap Flying Light (WON 1/2).

It’s quirky and unique but I love it. Laytown stage their annual race meeting today on the sand where they have raced since 1868 – long before PolyTrack was ever invented – Laytown is the original all-weather track !!

An accident in 1994 meant restrictions were put in place – the U-shaped track was removed and nowadays they race over just two distances 6 and 7 furlongs and each race has a maximum of 10 runners, ridden by experienced jockeys.

The venue in County Meath still attracts a crowd of around 5,000 and a huge organising committee to transform the area of beach to a racecourse with parade ring, bookies pitches, judge’s box and temporary grandstand erected. Marquees spring up to house the bar, restaurants, weighing room, ambulance room and secretary’s office. All can only be done when the tide is out….. naturally.

Previous course experience and more importantly ability here is a massive plus. But previous form is scarce given only 60 horses race at Laytown in a year !!

However, there is a standout bet on today’s card. Romeo’s On Fire who goes in the claimer at 5.40. It was a far stronger handicap he won last year and although his form has dipped since then he has been running in more competitive races and is so well in at the weights here it is untrue.

6.4 on BETDAQ is too good to be true and I’m excited by his chance and the price, but will also cover the nap on the place market as we are getting over evens and I can’t seem him out of the frame.

NAP: (Back equal stakes in win and place markets) Romeo’s On Fire (5.40 Laytown)
