SHAMROCK’S THURSDAY NAP AROUND 7/1 ON BETDAQ: Shamrock heads to Clonmel on Thursday for a nap trading at good morning odds on the DAQ.

It’s amazing the difference in price it makes having W P Mullins and R Walsh next to a horses name.

Quite right of course, given the duo’s exceptional record but sometimes you have to go back to the formbook and have a reality check. After all they don’t win EVERY race.

A classic case is the seven runner Munster Hurdle at Clonmel this afternoon. They have the favourite, Unika Le Reconce, but does this one really deserve to be trading at odds-on?

No, in my opinion. The French-bred mare won well on her debut for Mullins when making all the running to win at Thurles from subsequent winner (and SHAMROCK winning nap) Speckled Wood.

She clearly has potential and gets the mares allowance, but you are being asked to ‘buy’ money by the BETDAQ layers at 1.93 on a horse stepping up significantly in class.

There are a couple of rivals here with equally good credentials and potential who are trading at between three and eight times the price.

I like Rye Martini. The Colm Murphy trained runner won his first start over hurdles in grand style at Tipperary where he travelled well and gave the impression that the extra half mile today will suit even better. Owned by the Gigginstown House Stud he has a much better chance than the odds would suggest. And that is what it’s all about…..

We can make a profit with a win and place bet – just the two places but that’s exactly where I think he’ll finish.

SHAMROCK’S NAP:
Rye Martini (2.55 Clonmel) BACK WIN and PLACE equal stakes
