IRISH DERBY DAY AT THE CURRAGH: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby – the 5.15 on the big race card.

Dermot Weld, John Gosden and Jim Bolger have punctured Aidan O’Brien’s monopoly on the Irish Derby in recent years but it should be a case of normal service is resumed later today when Saxon Warrior is taken to justify short price favouritism and prove the best of of the Aidan O’Brien trained quartet in this year’s renewal.

The Japanese bred Saxon Warrior impressed when winning the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and was sent off the 4/5 favourite for the Epsom Derby earlier this month but disappointingly could only finish fourth. On that form he has something to find with Dee Ex Bee who finished second but is worth another chance as he wouldn’t be the first horse that didn’t enjoy the quirkiness of Epsom on Derby Day.

Of the bigger priced runners, I thought the Joseph O’Brien trained Latrobe was of interest to run into a place.

He has placed form at Group level and could easily still be on the upgrade.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Saxon Warrior (5.15 Curragh)
EACH-WAY: Latrobe (5.15 Curragh)
