CORK DERBY DAY: SHAMROCK looks ahead to Cork on Sunday with the feature races being the Cork Derby and the Group 3 Munster Oaks Stakes.

Good card at Cork this afternoon.

3:20 Munster Oaks Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m 4f, 10 runners)

Aidan O’Brien has won the last three renewals and has strength in numbers with four runners this year but no obvious candidate for the winner.

The Jim Bolger trained Glamorous Approach bids for a hat-trick. Her last two wins have come with give in the ground but she should be just as effective on this quicker surface.

Preference though is for the John Oxx trained Bengala who made a winning debut at Leopardstown in April and then recovered from a slow start to finish third in the Listed Salsabil Stakes at Navan. She should relish this step-up in trip to a mile and a half and has the scope to find further improvement.

3:50 Cork Derby (4yo+, 1m 4f, 9 runners)

A Derby in name but in reality a good class handicap.

Ger Lyons has managed to improve a horse formerly trained by Sir Michael Stoute. Mawaany looks a different horse this season, winning his maiden at Dundalk and then following up with an easy success in a Curragh handicap last time out off a mark of 77. Further improvement can’t be ruled out but this is clearly his toughest task to date.

Preference is for Spruce Meadows who chased home Glamorous Approach at the Curragh. Hopefully Glamorous Approach will run well in the Munster Oaks to give the form a late boost.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Bengala (3.20 Cork)
NEXT BEST: Spruce Meadows (3.50 Cork)
