CLASSIC CLUES: Shamrock previews the two Group races and the two Listed races on the card at Leopardstown.

You seriously couldn’t make it up.

My nap yesterday was Lurcher in the opener at Tramore.

Dictionary definition of ‘Lurch’ is:  roll or pitch suddenly or erratically

What happened to Lurcher in the race?  ducked left and ran out on bend

It’s becoming the week that keeps on giving….. bad news.

We head to Leopardsotwn today in search of a winner on a cracking card.

2:35 Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (Listed) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 8 runners) The United States was well touted before making a narrow winning debut over Dibayani (who also runs today) at the Curragh and he holds entries for all the big races but there is a slight concern. Trainer Aidan O’Brien describes him as slightly lazy and cheekpieces are on. All adds up to a lay for me in a race that O’Brien hasn’t excelled in over the years.

3:05 Heritage Stakes (Listed) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m, 5 runners) I take the opposite view here. I wasn’t expecting O’Brien’s Declaration Of War to be odds against on BETDAQ. He has the runaway Irish Lincoln winner Sweet Lightning to beat but is expected to have the scope to improve further.

3:40 Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (3yo, Class 1, 7f, 9 runners) There was just half a length between What Style and Snow Queen over course and distance last time but I take the winner What Style to confirm the form as she will be suited by the better ground. Snow Queen has had far more races so it’s quite probable What Style will improve significantly for her first outing and increase the gap between the pair.

4:15 P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes (Group 3) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 2f, 5 runners) Battle Of Marengo can keep on track for Epsom with a win here. He has to give weight away and his biggest danger could be stable companion Foundry.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: What Style (3.40 Leopardstown)
NEXT BEST: Declaration Of War (3.05 Leopardstown)
LAY: The United States (2.35 Leopardstown)
