MATCH POINT: Our tennis tipping column is 31 points up since it started. The next bet comes in the Dominic Thiem v Alexander Zverev Men’s semi-final on Friday morning. The winner will play Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s Final.

Novak Djokovic progressed to the final with a straight sets win over Federer (as predicted !!) so it was nice to get some points back in the bag after what has been a ‘challenging’ Australian Open so far.

Anyone who predicted Sofia Kenin v Garbine Muguruza for the Women’s Final should just do the Euromillions this week – as they might find that easier !! A full preview of that match coming up on Friday but firstly it’s the second men’s semi-final with Dominic Thiem taking on Alexander Zverev for the right to play Djokovic on Sunday.

Don’t forget it’s 0% COMMISSION ON BETDAQ for all tennis markets.

Thiem is understandably favourite, based largely on a 6-2 career head to head superiority but there is little to choose between the pair on rankings – Thiem on 5 and the four-year younger Zverev on 7.

Thiem has won the last two encounters in straight sets. 7-5, 6-2 in the ATP Finals in London and 6-4, 6-2,6-1 on the clay at Roland Garros back in 2018 (pictured).

Thiem said of his opponent: “For me, it’s funny because it’s the first time in a Grand Slam semi-final that I face a younger guy.

“We’re good friends. I’m happy for him, as well, that he’s playing so good here. He made his breakthrough at a Grand Slam.

“We have no secrets from each other. We played so many times, also on very special occasions already, at the [Nitto] ATP Finals, semi-finals, Roland Garros quarter-finals.

It’s a nice rivalry we have. It’s great that we add an Australian Open semi-final to this one.”

The major weapon for Zverev is his serve. In his quarter-final win over Stan Wawrinka, he landed 84% of his first-serves (63/75) in the last three sets.

He’ll need something close to that to counter Thiem who has one of the best returns on the tour.

Unlike the first semi-final, this could easily go the distance (which will suit Djokovic perfectly who has an extra day of recovery). I’ll play a 3-2 win either way with a slightly higher stake on the more experienced Thiem.
