IPL IS BACK: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Sunday’s IPL Game 30 between Chennai Super Kings v Mumbai Indians with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

After the IPL was suspended in India back in early May, the tournament finally resumes in the UAE on Sunday! As you would expect, there’s been plenty of drama around the tournament already and we haven’t even started. India pulled out of the 5th Test match against England because of Covid19, but the fans quickly blamed the IPL being around the corner as to why the players didn’t want to play. Given the money involved in the IPL, it’s hard to get away from that argument but on Sunday all the talking stops and we finally get down to business. We should have some excellent weeks ahead on BETDAQ Betting Exchange for trading cricket.

We also got news that in 2022 the IPL will go to a ten team tournament. I’m sure the jury will be out on that too as it will make the tournament longer and that has a knock on effect with cricket around the world, but given the talent on the bench at some IPL teams I feel there is room for ten teams. Anyway, we start on Sunday with Chennai Super Kings taking on Mumbai Indians and the excellent news for UAE cricket fans is fans will be allowed back in stadiums for the IPL. The UAE are seeing it as a test before hosting the T20 World Cup, and hopefully everything goes well.

It feels like years ago that the tournament was suspended, however at the time CSK were playing really good cricket and sitting top of the table. They were only overtaken by Delhi Capitals because they played one game more. Mumbai Indians had started the tournament slowly, but they faced some tricky batting conditions at their grounds and I’m sure conditions in the UAE will suit them more.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

We start the IPL back in Dubai and I’m sure we won’t have any weather worries at this time of year in Dubai. It’s nice that we have the 2020 data to work off now too given the UAE hosted the tournament here last year. We saw a lot of cricket at Dubai, as you would expect given it was only three grounds – the same three grounds will host games this season too – and the average score batting first in Dubai was 172. We actually had three tied games here last season, but there was an edge batting first. This is the first game of course so it will be fact finding mission, but I would expect very similar conditions to last year.

RECOMMENDED BET:

It’s no surprise to see Mumbai Indians as favourites given how well they played when the IPL was here last season. They still have an incredibly strong side, and they only started the tournament slowly due to some tricky batting conditions. CSK have been excellent this season, but I wonder will they suffer from the change in conditions. They have an excellent side for Indian conditions, but they were very poor in the IPL last year when it was in the UAE, and I worry they will fall back to that level here. This is a game for small stakes as it’s the first game, and Mumbai are worth backing at 1.8.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

A similar view to in-running strategy should be taken here to the pre-off staking, it has to be small stakes to re-start the tournament. Although we are starting the tournament again and the points stay the same, you have to approach it like a brand new tournament. The points table makes no difference to trading each match in new conditions! As I said above, I feel the CSK team is set up to play well in India and I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle UAE conditions – I would expect their spinners to go for more runs, and that should suit Mumbai Indians. There was a slight edge batting first here last year, so I would look for trades on the team batting first, which would be ideal if that was Mumbai Indians.
