MATCH OVERVIEW:

The Indian Premier League moves back to Dubai on Thursday after two days in Abu Dhabi. This is a massive game for both sides, with the two of them at the bottom of the table. More pressure is on Punjab however; as they only have one win from five games. A Hyderabad win here would must them back into the mix, but they have lost Bhuvneshwar to a thigh injury and that leaves a big gap in their bowling.

They really suffered against Mumbai at the weekend without Bhuvneshwar, even Kane Williamson was needed to bowl! It was at Sharjah though and they actually kept Mumbai down to the lowest total of their season there in 208/5. They lost comfortably by 34 runs though what really let them down was their six hitting. They don’t have many power players, and at a ground like Sharjah that was really important. They only managed seven sixes – which might sound like a lot anywhere else but you should be looking double that at a ground like Sharjah.

Once Bairstow goes at the top of the order, Warner hasn’t really fired and the rest of their batsmen struggle to score at a strikerate of over 150. That will cost them when they have a weakened bowling attack. All that being said, Punjab have their own issues with bowling and a weak middle order. Nobody had successfully chased any target here until CSK chased down Punjab’s 178/4 without losing a single wicket!

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

It’ll be fascinating to see if we get another successful chase after seeing CSK chase down 178/4 at the weekend. Perhaps it has just worked out that we didn’t see a successful chase at the start of the tournament, but we have had two ties here. Both sides have weak bowling line-ups now Hyderabad have had some injuries. I would expect to see another score in and around 175 from the team batting first. The weather has been superb in Dubai thus far, and we’re set fair again.

RECOMMENDED BET:

Hyderabad were very poor against Mumbai at the weekend, however I did note that Hyderabad wouldn’t be suited to conditions in Sharjah. They might be more suited to Dubai, but the loss of Bhuvneshwar is massive in my opinion. I know Punjab have had their issues, and they sit bottom of the table with only one win from five but I think they are worth a small bet here at odds against. Their bowling might be suited to Hyderabad batsmen and I wouldn’t have Hyderabad favourites here.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

So far the best strategy has been to bat first, look for trades on the team batting first – especially with a view of trading them in the final five overs. You would have got decent market movement in the last Punjab game here, but CSK absolutely blew them away in the second innings. I would see how today develops before committing to that strategy, but I would heavily favour the side batting first again today.

That being said, I have major worries about both bowling line-ups, and the shrewd play is looking quick trades on the batting side. Keep an eye out for dew too, as that will make batting easier as well. I wouldn’t be keen on the Punjab lower order, and that might be a trading option on Hyderabad.
