MATCH OVERVIEW:

India will be looking to wrap up the ODI series on Wednesday in Ahmedabad after they steamrolled West Indies in the 1st ODI. As I said in my preview of the 1st ODI, I felt that was West Indies best chance of a win given the few Covid19 issues in the Indian camp. However, it was totally one way traffic and India chased down the West Indies score within 30 overs. The markets have reacted to that obviously, and India have been pushed into 1.18 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange – we probably won’t see 1.3+ again this series!

Yuzvendra Chahal was man of the match in the 1st ODI, ripping through the West Indies middle order and taking four wickets. I noted the issues West Indies had against spin in the middle order at home against Ireland, and it’s going to be a very long tour for them in India when you’re having issues again spin! Obviously the West Indies score was very much under par, but India chased down the score so quickly you’d have to fear what kind of score they’d rack up if they batted first. There’s a lot going against West Indies here and as I said before the 1st ODI, their main target on this tour is probably the T20 series. It’s hard to see them winning an ODI to be honest – this India side is just too strong especially in their home conditions.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

It was very much a one sided game in the 1st ODI here, with West Indies making batting look difficult and India making it look easy. I think there’s too much of a gulf in class between the sides to get a true par score here. If West Indies bat first I would expect an “under par” score in the sense that the score will likely be under 250, and if India bat first you can nearly add 100 to that total. India scored 178/4 in 28 overs so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a run line of close to 350 if they decided to bat first. India took seven wickets with spin so I wouldn’t say the pitch was good for batting to be honest, it did turn but like I said, the gulf in class is too big between the sides to see a true par score. I suppose it would be interesting to see India chase 300 with the turn, but they’d probably still win.

RECOMMENDED BET:

After watching the 1st ODI, it’s hard to see how West Indies win an ODI here. The pitch offered turn and a little bit of variable pace – that might see the India scoring power come down a little, but it also makes life very difficult for the West Indies. We saw in the Ireland series what issues they have in the middle order against spin, and losing seven wickets to spin in the 1st ODI here just highlights that again. You won’t get rich backing India at 1.18, but it’s very hard to see past them winning here. Their side is just too strong in these conditions.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

We learned a lot from the 1st ODI, as I expected. The pitch offered turn and I would expect spin to play a big role again here. I would be keen to support the spinners from both sides – however it was obvious that India bowled with a lot more discipline compared to the West Indies. I would really reduce stakes if you’re looking for a trade on the West Indies, but given conditions the spinners should pick up wickets. It seems a no brainer to take on the West Indies middle order again with the Indian spin and that’s likely to be the best trade of this game. I’d like to see India bat first to see what kind of score they can get, but we’re probably looking at 300+ and a 1.01 train if that was the case to be honest. Having said that, if West Indies bat first I’d expect the spinners to rip through their middle order and we’ll have a 1.01 train that way too!
