WATFORD V SOUTHAMPTON

4.30pm This is an interesting fixture, where both sides have outperformed their league position this season. Watford are clearly in the danger zone with regards to relegation, but they have to trust the process. xG puts them all the way up to 11th and while that’s not what many fans want to hear when you’re sitting in 16th and one point off the bottom three; the results should turn if they keep the process the same.

They enjoy home advantage here but that’s not an advantage looking at Southampton this season! The Saints are bottom of the table on home form, even Arsenal were ablt to beat them midweek – however they are 6th on the away table and have been very impressive on their travels.

Watford should have beaten Leicester here on their return but they could only manage a 1-1 draw with very late goals. They then lost away to Burnley in a close game. I’m surprised to see under 2.5 goals as big as 1.85 here. Both these sides generally keep things very tight and Watford can’t afford to go into attack mode from the start given their position. I’m even more surprised to see Southampton as big as 3.05 though given their performances away from home. They are creating 1.63 goals on average away from home and with Watford under pressure I think Southampton are definitely worth backing at the odds. These two always have tight affairs, with two draws from the last three meetings with Southampton winning 2-1 in November 2019. Southampton to edge it for me, and the 3.05 is cracking value.

  • Southampton are looking to complete their first league double over Watford since the 2011-12 Championship campaign.
  • After a run of 12 consecutive Premier League games without a win at Vicarage Road, Watford have now won four of their last seven home league games (D2 L1), including victories over Manchester United and Liverpool in that run.
  • Southampton have won a league-high share 62% of their Premier League points in away games this season (23/37).

  • In this exact fixture last season, Southampton’s Shane Long scored the fastest ever goal in Premier League history, finding the net after just 7.69 seconds.
  • Ben Foster has started the last 99 Premier League matches for Watford – if he starts this match, he will be only the 19th different player to start 100 consecutive games and, aged 37 years and 86 days, the oldest player to do so based on their age in their 100th consecutive appearance.
  • Southampton striker Danny Ings has been directly involved in 10 goals in his last 10 away Premier League starts (8 goals, 2 assists).
  • Since the Premier League restart, Craig Dawson has had more shots (4) and shots on target (3) than any other Watford player, while no Hornets player has had more touches in the opposition box than Dawson (6, level with Troy Deeney).
