WEEKEND INTERNATIONALS A solid result for the couple of home nations that have seen action already this weekend, I must say however, although Ireland, Wales and Austria all sit on level points, from what I watched last night there is a world of difference between Ireland and the latter two sides. But they got the three points on offer, so that is all that matters in the end. Anyways, looking forward to the weekend there is a few more bets I fancy.

England v Malta

5.00pm Saturday It obviously wouldn’t be much of a pick to say England will win on Saturday, they will be expected to put a few goals past Malta in a comfortable first victory for Gareth Southgate. Everybody will be looking at how many they can put past Malta, as the visitors look to be the whipping boys of the group.

One thing I have noticed in the past couple of years is that there is less teams getting absolutely demolished by the footballing giants. Of course it still happens, but just not a frequently which is certainly a positive thing. Malta are a team that have improved considerably over the past few years, now of course they won’t be going to England expecting to get a win, but they will look to keep the score down as much as possible.

I think this is a solid English side right now, but one thing they are missing is an Alan Shearer or Michael Owen. Somebody who can be relied upon to score in almost every game. They have plenty of guys who can chip in with a few goals, but at times you really need somebody you can look to to put the ball in the net. English football is in a bit of turmoil, leading to Gareth Southgate being in charge. Expect this to be an easy win, but I don’t think Malta will be quite as bad as people will be expecting. I think they can keep the score to a reasonable level.

Poland v Denmark

7.45pm Saturday I am quite high on this Polish side, I think they play some excellent football, and have one of the best strike partnerships in International football. I think they were very unlucky in the Euros, going out to Portugal on penalties in a game where they really were the better side over the course of the game. They play a great attacking style of football, and are most certainly a team everybody else would like to avoid.

Denmark are a decent enough side, led by Spurs maestro, Eriksen but I think the Polish are a level above. Poland is also a tough place to go, with a very vocal fan base. I think the price here is very generous as i would have put Poland below evens, but hitting a shade above I have to be all over them getting the win tomorrow night.

TONY’S BEST BET:
Back Poland to win at 2.02.

Moldova v Ireland

7.45pm Sunday That was one ugly win on Thursday. Ireland were very poor, but as I expected they were able to scrape through. My bet came in as the bad thing is that I expected a game like that. They have a real problem right now with the players available. There just isn’t goals in the side. Shane Long is a great player with a great engine, but honestly he doesn’t exactly have a prolific record with Ireland.

The biggest problem I see is there is no real identity in this side. They aren’t good at passing the ball around and breaking down opponents. As well as this, they aren’t very good at the long ball right now either. They don’t have a big huge physical presence up front that can hold the ball up while waiting for support. Unfortunately the mix of players just isn’t there right now, and looking at the underage setting I don’t see much coming through in the near future either.

Ireland struggled to an ugly win, and I see Sunday being very similar. Normally you would be expecting Ireland to win with comfort travelling to Moldova, but as i mentioned there just isn’t enough goals in the team. I can’t see Moldova grabbing a goal, but I also struggle to see Ireland putting a few past the hosts. Expect another disappointing performance, but for Ireland to just get the job done.

TONY’S BEST BET:
Back Ireland 1-0
