Here is that fabulous July betting month, revealing the jackpots as they happened.

THE LANGUAGE OF DAQMAN

Blinkers & visor, noseband, cheekpieces (headgear): Aids to help a horse concentrate.

Bridesmaid: Often on the premises without taking the bouquet or the cigar (i.e. often placed without winning)

Bridle horse: Cruises before coming under pressure, then finds little extra speed or stamina.

Buying money: Taking odds-on offers about a horse.

Dark ‘un: A dark horse; his form is not transparent; he doesn’t have the obvious form to win.

Dog on a raft: Offers about a horse are drifting all the time.

Edge: Statistics, circumstances or information that appear to give the backer an advantage.

Glass horse: A horse with problems that is hard to keep sound and runs rarely.

Hold-up horse: A horse that waits off the pace.

Hungry mouse: Shrewd computer punter quick to respond to ‘value’ offers or waiting to pounce on a lay in running.

Hype/hyped horse: The Press has gone overboard and the horse is a shorter price than it should be. See ‘overbet.’

Improver: Young horse on the upgrade which is rated below some others but could improve quickly past them, or will do so as he progresses and the older horses’ abilities fade.

Matched: Offers exchanged on Betdaq.

The Moral: The horse that deserves most credit for a race; for example, it was beaten narrowly, despite giving weight to the winner.

Nap & Banker: Best of the day: see Betting Plan.

Nugget: A piece of ‘golden information.’ A horse ‘for gold’ that day.

Offers: Prices available on Betdaq.

Official ratings: An ability figure which translates to the weight a horse would carry in handicaps.

Base rating: A ratings assessment based solely on past results.

Future ratings: A revised assessment where other factors are added to the base rating: plus or minus for the going, distance and stats.

Overbet: Because the stable is in form, or a top jockey rides, or because the horse has been hyped, the animal is a shorter price than it should be.

Overs: a) If you had a bet at a much bigger price than the horse is now, the difference between the two prices is the ‘overs’.

Pace horse: Also called ‘front-runner’ and ‘van runner’ (i.e. close-up runner). Example: ‘Joe’s Boy was in the van all the way’ or ‘Fame And Glory made all’ (important in back-and-lay betting)

Play Up: Use your winnings for further bets.

Plunge bet: Risking more than the selection really deserves.

Points: Fictitious stake on a race, where a point can mean any unit of stake, whether a pound, £10 or £100.

Take-out: Deduction for ‘operating costs’ (example, by the Tote).

The one to take out of the race: A horse to follow.

Taking a Position: The first bet on a race, which will determine further bets to improve, or cover, the position you’ve put yourself in.

Tongue-tie: A breathing aid; stops a horse swallowing his tongue.

Positive/negative vibes: Gets a good/bad word from the training centre and/or is strong in the market (‘money talks’)

Pricing up: Assessing the percentage probability of each horse and, therefore, assigning it a price, so that you can compare its real chance with offers on Betdaq.

Queuing up: Offers awaiting a match on Betdaq.

Quirky: A horse with mental problems that misbehaves or doesn’t always ‘put it in’ (do his best).

Rear runner: A horse that races from well off the pace. A backmarker.

Raving Post: A reference to the Racing Post when its headlines are considered ‘over the top.’ See Hype.

Schooled well: Has jumped hurdles or fences well in prep work at home.

Schooled intensively: Special attention paid to jumping problems at home.

Shape of the race: The quality of a race, how a race might be run; whether it’s tricky or contains many runners with very little chance.

Stand-out: The best horse in the race, particularly when a value price: such a ‘stand-out’ is equivalent to a ‘jackpot banker.’

Stats: Records about a race. Could include course records, stable form and other facts and factors.

Stone bonker: Good thing. A certainty.

System: Method for betting, usually fallacious. Parodied in the expression ‘system doing well; send more money’ (the reference is to a systems punter sending a telegram).

Unbackable: A horse that’s a very short price and not worth the risk. Not even for ‘buying money.’

Value: A horse is a better price than it should be, given the situation it’s in.

W6times: Waited with, will win when wanted.

Winner by default: When other horses failed to perform to their best. Also used when selecting a horse, where the rest of the field is unsuited by the distance or conditions.

Worth a pound: A bet to small stakes at a big price ‘just in case.’

Wrong price: A horse that’s seen in pricing up to be bigger odds than it should be (but not when a drifter).
